Match Reports 2008/2009

3rd May 2009 - Premier Division 1
Hundred Acre
0 - 3
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Davis 2, Shoesmith

A reversed fixture, played at the Vale stadium, with the League champions, Hundred Acre, looking to sign off in relaxed style.

Overseen by match official, Glynn Poole, Paget formed on the centre circle and applauded the newly crowned champions. Paget faced a formidable wind, which played a large part in a very defensive Paget half, however, it was Paget who would snatch the lead. On 13 minutes a cross was met by John Shoesmith, who fed the ball to Klaudian Tarano, who in turn flicked the ball to Ryan Davis. Acre keeper, Paul Breeden had little chance with Davis finishing with a half volley.

Paget had to defend a continuous bombardment of their goal. Credit to keeper, Mike Griffiths and defenders Lee Harrison, Mike Sanders and Scott Handley for soaking up the pressure. Half time 1-0.

The second half brought further Acre pressure. On 55 minutes, RyanDavis added to his tally with a superb direct free kick. Struck from 22 yards out the Acre keeper was left stranded.

On 70 minutes, a strong cross was allowed to bobble and was met by John Shoesmith, who tapped home for 3-0.

So, Paget held out as 3-0 winners. A very competitive game with finishing being the overall difference.

Paget: Griffths, Handley, Sanders (capt), Harrison, Simms, Taylor, Ingram, Shoesmith, Butler, Davis and Tarano. Sub: Foulsham (for Ingram).

2 - 2
Lion of Judah
Paget Scorers - Tarano, Handley

A competitive fixture that bore no resemblance to the league standings and potentially tiresome end of season run in. Lion of Judah made their intentions perfectly clear and came to win. Paget responded in kind, however, an early defensive substitution was required when Sullivan pulled up and was replaced by Handley. This entertaining opening, took 35 minutes for the Lions to get behind and clear of the Paget rearguard, resulting in a clinical finish by J.Snape, who lobbed the advancing keeper, Mike Griffiths. Half time 0-1.

In the 2nd half, Paget began in the ascendancy, which immediately resulted in a Tarano equaliser. His 18th goal of the season followed a cross, a fumbled catch, and the presence of Tarano to tap home from close range.

On or about 65 minutes, the Lion's regained advantage when a cross field ball got J. Snape behind the Paget defence. Hesitancy at the back allowed Snape to compose himself before rounding the keeper and calmly finishing.

Ten minutes, later a direct free kick was awarded to Paget from 35 yards out. Scott Handley struck the ball with such venom, that it flew over the flapping Lion's keeper, and struck the net. The ferocity and pace was maintained with both teams seeking a winner. The substitutions saw Butler replacing Shoesmith and Ingram replacing Murray. Paget skipper Derek Carr broke free but failed to beat the keeper with a low drive. At 2-2, honours were shared and even.

The team: Griffiths, Sullivan (Handley), Harrison, Sanders, Simms, Taylor, Carr (capt), Davis, Shoesmith (Butler), Tarano and Murray (Ingram). Unused substitute: Talbot.

2 - 2
Bellford Rovers
Paget Scorers - Harrison, Handley

Paget Sports again suffered a last minute equaliser this time at the hands of Bellford Rovers. On a perfect morning for football the game started at a frantic pace.

Bellford Rovers started the brighter of the two sides and should taken the lead on 20 minutes. Only a last ditch tackle from Sullivan saved a certain goal for Bellford. The deadlock was finally broken on 30 minutes when a swift Bellford move was finished off from close range to give Bellford 1-0 half time lead.

The second half Paget Sports stepped up a gear and after a spell of concerted pressure Paget Sports were level. Lee Harrison finishing sweetly with a low shot into the bottom corner.

Paget Sports were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box when it was clearly a penalty kick as the foul was at least a yard inside the box. But Paget won a corner from the resulting free kick and took the lead. Scott Handley's in swinging corner deceived everybody a went straight into the far corner of the net to put Paget Sports 2-1 in front

Paget Sports had their chances to kill off the game but on the 80minute mark the tough tackling Dean Taylor limped off injured. This gave more room for Bellford to play and they started to to put pressure on the Paget Sports defence in the final 5 minutes of the game.

Paget Sports looked to have weathered the storm and looked to be heading for another three points when one last attack from Bellford down the Paget Sports right. the ball was hammered across the Paget penalty area and the Bellford striker bravely threw his head on to it to make 2-2.

On reflection the draw was a fair result, the game was played in a first class attitude from both sides. Paget Sports would like to wish Bellford Rovers all the best in their final game of the season and we looked forward to meeting them in premier one next season.

Paget Sports Team: Curtis, Carr (capt), Sanders, Sullivan, Handley, Taylor (Ingram), Davis, Butler, Shoesmith (Tarano), Harrison and Murray.

12th April 2009 - Premier Division 1
Bellford Rovers
1 - 2
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Murray, Davis

Paget Sports visited Bellford Rovers at the Pavilions, Moor Lane, in the knowledge, that to avoid a relegation issue, a minimum of 3 points were required from the remaining 4 games.

On a morning where excellent weather and playing conditions prevailed, the game was set in motion by match official, Mr Craig Beechey.

An earnest opening period, witnessed much threat and entertainment. Neither side carved out a solid opportunity, however, Paget captain, Derek Carr, came closest, when he headed 5 yards out from a corner, straight into the arms of the Bellford keeper.

On 20 minutes, a drop kick from Paget keeper, Scott Curtis, was allowed to bounce and subsequently ran on perfectly for wide man, Andy Butler. From 10 yards, Butler shot low and hard, dragging the effort across the keeper and striking the base of the far post. The rebound fell sweetly for Anthony Murray who shot low and hard into the net. This gave Murray his 4th goal of the season and Paget an invaluable 1-0 lead.

Half time 1-0.

The second half continued where the the first half left off, like a pendulum, end to end, then, on 60 minutes, Paget midfielder, Ryan Davis, capitalised on some poor Bellford midfield/defensive play. Pouncing on the ball, Ryan, ran at the opposition, gliding past each challenge, and reaching the edge of the penalty box. He then unleashed a powerful shot, hit low, across the advancing Keeper. The ball hammered the net coming to rest in the bottom corner. Oh, what a welcome sight! 2-0 Paget!

A number of contentious Bellford appeals fell on deaf ears. However, on 80 minutes, Paget appealed for a handball in the Paget penalty area. Ignored! However, the resulting clearance fell close to the edge of the Paget `D'. The referee judged that Paget had committed a sin and gave Bellford a direct free kick. The kick beat the wall and was pushed into the net by the outstretched Curtis.

2-1 and game on!

The remaining 15 minutes (5 mins injury time) were fast and furious. Paget substitutes, Tom Foulsham entered the fray for the injured Matthew Sullivan (hamstring) and Michael Griffiths for the injured Jay Simms (ankle).

Both teams played with great determination and good will. That win, together with Warren Athletic's loss (2-1 .v. Halfway), will be enough for Paget Sports to look forward to a second season in Premier Division One. Shackles off and 3 relaxing matches to follow!

The Players: Curtis, Carr (capt), Sanders, Sullivan (Foulsham), Simms (Griffiths), Taylor, Davis, Butler, Shoesmith, Tarano and Murray.

5th April 2009 - Premier Division 1
Paget Sports
1 - 1
Hundred Acre
Paget Scorer - Shoesmith

On a clear sunny day, with no wind, Paget Sports hosted the Champions elect. In one of 5 remaining league fixtures, Paget were under no illusions that a previously mixed bagged of league results, required a much needed Paget win, with a view to cementing a 2nd season at the Premier League Division One level.

The fixture was officiated by Mr John Drinkwater.

The opening half was equally shared, best described as one, of hard industrious effort. Both teams provided excellent entertainment.

Half-time 0-0.

The second half was equally entertaining with both teams giving one hundred per cent. Both goalkeepers were kept busy, jointly making some superb saves.

On or about 60 minutes, John Shoesmith, broke the deadlock, when he received a ball on the edge of the Hundred Acre 18 yard line. He pulled the trigger with his left foot and a bullet of shot travelled fast and low into the bottom corner of the Acre net. Paget 1-0 up!

The game continued in the industrious fashion with both teams having opportunities. Both Keepers were inspired and made some excellent saves. The argument as to which team dominated will rage on, however, it is fair to say, that Hundred Acre attacked like their lives depended on it ,and Paget defended in the same vain.

So,with 13 minutes of injury time played, Hundred Acre equalised from a corner kick. The ball was crossed with venom and was headed with equal venom into the roof of the Paget net. The match official blew for time! Full time 1-1. Paget are making a habit of getting stung at the end of a game.

Great entertainment, which was played with excellent attitude.

Paget Sports Line Up Curtis, Handley, Harrison, Sanders, Simms, Sullivan, Shoesmith (Griffiths), Carr, Taylor, Murray, Tarano (Foulsham).

Warren Rovers
2 - 1
Paget Sports
Paget Scorer - Own Goal

Once again, the charitable Paget Sports Football team took to the field and presented Warren Rovers with an early goal (20 minutes).

A straight forward defensive header by Mike Sanders was collected by Keeper Mike Griffiths who then inexplicably fumbled for Warren to score. Within 5 minutes, Warren were 2-0 up when the Warren keeper drop kicked and the dropping ball was allowed to bounce between defenders and goalkeeper. Warren were onto that like a shot and lobbed the advancing Paget keeper.

The first half was dominated by Warren. Half time 2-0.

The second half produced a Paget performance of old. Persistant pressure failed to produce a goal until 78 minutes. A defensive clearance created an own goal when the kick was sliced over the Warren keeper and found the net.

Paget were unfortunate not to score in the own right, with Simms rattling the bar and the Warren keeper making some wonderful saves from the head of Harrison. The last 12 minutes were a tense affair, but Warren held out.

Overall, a point each would have been the ideal result. But, with Paget all out of lady luck, the writing was on the wall.

Our thanks and appreciation to match referee, Alan Fleming, who conducted affairs in a positive and relaxed fashion. Both teams were a credit to the Festival league. A competitive game that was played in excellent spirit.

Our best wishes are extended to both Warren Rovers and Bellford Rovers who face each other next week in the Festival Cup final.

Paget Sports Line Up Griffiths, Handley, Harrison, Sanders, Butler, Simms, Sullivan (Shoesmith), Carr (capt)(Talbot), Taylor, Foulsham, Tarano.

22nd March 2009 - Festival Cup Semi Final
Bellford Rovers
6 - 0
Paget Sports

This match report will be concise as the lads assure me that reports involving a loss are not read, however, homage to the players of Bellford Rovers, who performed fairly and with precision.

Playing against a considerable wind, Paget once again got off to a very slow start. Conceding on 5 minutes was not a great start, however, as the game progressed, Paget were able to create opportunities but failing to convert. With the game heading towards a 1-0 reverse at half time, poor defensive marking left the Bellford forward free to convert a 2nd. Half time 2-0.

There is little to say about the second half, however, it did appear that Bellford scored following every Paget set piece. Atrocious Paget defending was clearly apparent.

That said, the overall difference between the teams was clearly that of player experience. Bellford worked hard for each other, supported and directed. A very business like performance which was rewarded with a good result.

Paget Sports line up Curtis, Handley, Simms, Sullivan, Sanders, Taylor (Ingram), Shoesmith (Murray), Butler, Carr (capt), Tarano (Dixon), Harrison.

15th March 2009 - Premier Division 1
Blackwood
2 - 1
Paget Sports
Paget Scorer - Shoesmith

This was always going to be a difficult fixture, however, Paget Sports will need to stop playing Russian roulette in the last 18 yards, before results will improve. With barely a minute on the clock, a Blackwood throw was allowed to enter the 6 yard area. A static Paget rearguard failed to consider the danger and Blackwood's Tilsley thumped the ball home. 1 nil with a minute on the clock.
Additional Paget injuries witnessed first half substitutions involving Dean Taylor (Foulsham), and Scott Handley (Knight). Each fearing back problems.

Half time 1-0.

On 75 minutes a Paget Sports corner was well met by John Shoesmith and his header brought Paget level. The score remained 1-1 until the last seconds, when inexplicably, the four Paget defenders, failed to mark any one of 3 Blackwood player's, each lined up waiting to race through on goal. A long ball followed and true to form the unhindered Milliard collected, ran on, rounded the keeper and slotted home. 2-1! Fair play to Blackwood for remaining focused.

At the centre, the full time whistle blew. For the second year running, Paget have fallen victim to a late Blackwood equaliser. Last year Blackwood equalised deep in stoppage time.

Moral of this story, stay awake at the wheel and play to the final whistle!

Paget Sports Line Up M.Griffiths, D.Munday, S.Handley (Knight), M.Sullivan, M.Ingram (Dixon), D. Carr, J.Simms, D.Taylor (Foulsham), J.Shoesmith, K.Tarano, A.Murray,

11th March 2009 - Premier Division 1
Halfway
1 - 2
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Carr, Shoesmith

Having lost the previous two games, and in particular a 7-1 home defeat to Halfway, it was important that Paget rose to the occasion.

With three officials, dry/fair weather, and a 7.30pm floodlit kick off, the occasion had all the hallmarks of a cracking night. A Cup Final feel.

A highly charged and competitive opening witnessed much drama without reward for either team. On 25 minutes, a poor Scott Handley clearance, crossed the face of the Paget 18 yard line, where it took the remaining Paget defenders by surprise. Halfway responded first and drilled the ball home. 1-0 Halfway.

On 32 minutes, a Paget corner was crossed to the near post, where it was allowed to bobble, before team captain, Derek Carr, drilled home from 6 yards. Half time 1-1.

The second half was as fast and vigorous as the first. Entertaining, incidental, and heart in the hand stuff followed. Both teams went hell for leather to get the winner. Goal mouth to goal mouth action, invariably by passing the two sets of battling midfield groups. The tackles and the challenges flew in. Entertaining to the neutral, undoubtedly.

On or about 75 minutes, Paget forward, Anthony Murray, released his forward compatriot, Lee Harrison, who ran onto on the ball, drove left of goal, then crossed (centre) to the advancing John Shoesmith, who fired vollisticaly beyond the Halfway keeper. 2-1 Paget!

The remainder of the game maintained its high tempo with Halfway driving forward in waves and Paget counter attacking.

An intriguing encounter came to an end following 4 injury time minutes.

Paget Keeper, Scott Curtis, battled with a suspected dose of food poisoning and kept goal. Unfortunately, late on, he fell victim to a back injury. His replacement, was centre back, Dan Munday, and substitute Jason Talbot deputised at right back.

We would like to thank the match referee, Glynn Poole, for his understanding of the game and allowing both teams to compete with a passion. On this occasion, Paget reversed the result, however, win, lose or draw, both teams and the officials were an entertaining credit.

I would like to thank the ground staff/officials of Boldmere St Michaels Fc, and the players/officials of Halfway Fc for preparing/presenting an enjoyable occasion.

To the players of Paget Sports Fc, I send my heart felt thanks for the excellent attitude, that assisted in producing a performance on all areas of the pitch. Congratulations.....

Paget Sports Line Up S.Curtis (J.Talbot), D.Munday, S.Handley, M.Sullivan, A.Butler (M.Ingram), D. Carr, J.Simms, D.Taylor, J.Shoesmith, K.Tarano (A.Murray), L.Harrison.

Blackwood
Paget Scorer - Breeden

The first opportunity for Paget to put the memory of a 7-1 drubbing to bed. Hosting the league leaders was always going to be a tough ask. The opening opportunities fell to Blackwood with Scott Curtis called on to make some remarkable saves. On 20 minutes, Blackwood reaped the benefit of poor defending when Eugene Dixon had the ball at his feet and remarkably chose not to kick clear. The ball was nicked from his feet and thumped home! A goal from nothing! The Blackwood 2nd was a through ball which inexplicably caught the Paget rear guard square and left staring at one another. A fine lob over Keeper Curtis made it two nil. Half time 0-2.

The opening 4 minutes saw Paget have an equal amount of chances but each went begging, then a killer goal when Blackwood released their left winger. Inexplicably the Paget defenders were chasing the referee, presumably for offside, and so, in doing the winger went on to shoot low past Curtis. A Paget goal followed when the industrious Breeden was felled. Breeden converted the penalty. At 3-1, Blackwood coasted to the finish line. An entertaining fixture which will be re-matched in one week.

Next up, a midweek fixture with Halfway. It doesn't get much better than this!

Paget Sports Line Up S Curtis, E. Dixon (J. Talbot), S.Handley, M.Sanders (A. Butler), A. Murray (J. Shoesmith), M. Sullivan, D Carr, J.Simms, D. Taylor, T. Breeden, L. Harrison.

1 - 7
Halfway
Paget Scorer - Handley

Paget Sports suffered their heaviest defeat ever to an excellent Halfway side. Halfway took the lead on ten minutes. Paget Sports drew level from a great free kick from Scott Handley on the seventeen minute mark. Halfway regained the lead from the penalty spot after thirty minutes. Scott Curtis pulled off a great save on the stroke of half time to keep the score 1-2 to Halfway.

The second half was all Halfway and the further six goals they scored completely demoralised Paget Sports the only highlight for Paget Sports were some fine saves from keeper Scott Curtis to keep the score at seven.

Halfway play in the Ernie Baxter Trophy Final on Tuesday night all the best to them. If they play anything like they played today it should be a cracking game against Hundred Acre and one not to be missed.

As for Paget Sports Lets dust ourselves down and prepare for the Blackwood game next Sunday. Remember Lads you don't become a bad team overnight and these thing happen in football from time to time. Lets get back to winning ways on Sunday against Blackwood

Paget Sports Line Up S Curtis, D. Munday (knight), S.Handley, M.Sanders, A. Butler, Ingram, J.Simms, D. Taylor, J. Shoesmith , K. Tarano, Sullivan.

15th February 2009 - Premier Division 1
St Gerards
0 - 4
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Breeden 2, Taylor, Sanders

This castle Vale derby suggested a resurgent St Gerards would be licking their lips at the thought of playing Paget Sports on the back of a 5-2 home win .v. Lion of Judah. St Gerards points toll of 4, included a point taken earlier in the season, when they outperformed and outfought a lax Paget performance, a game St Gerards deserved to win.

This fixture was officiated by Mr John Drinkwater. Also present were the Birmingham Evening Mail & Vale Mail press photographers. All appeared to enjoy this warm weather game which came to life when Tony Breedon gave Paget the lead on 5 minutes. Breedon slipped through the offside trap to comfortably slot home.

The remainder of the half saw Paget opportunities come and go in abundance. Paget were further thwarted by abundant offside decisions. Stand in Paget keeper, Dan Munday, remained gratefully unemployed.

Half time 1-0.

Paget remained anxious, up to 49 minutes, when Paget went 2 up. A corner was cleared and fell to the edge of the `D', where Mike Sanders connected and volleyed. The ball crashed in off the post, and settled sweetly in the back of the net. The goal visibly lifted the Paget anxiety.

Dean Taylor followed up a Breedon effort to slot home on 65 minutes.

On 75 minutes, a well taken Tony Breedon shot, wrapped up proceedings.

Paget Sports ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Stand in keeper, Dan Munday, will not have an easier occasion this season..... guaranteed!

A very pleasing performance and result, presented by the team:

Paget Sports Line Up D. Munday, S.Handley (knight), M.Sanders, A. Butler (Ingram), M.Sullivan, J.Simms, D. Carr (capt), D. Taylor, J. Shoesmith (Dixon), K. Tarano, and T. Breedon.

1st February 2009 - Ernie Baxter Trophy Semi Final
Hundred Acre
3 - 2
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Breeden, Taylor

They say lightning dosn't strike twice but sadly for Paget Sports it has. Last year Lyndon Urchins this year Hundred Acre. same competition, same score. So what am i on about Paget Sports losing in a semi final to a last minute goal for the second season running.

On a freezing cold morning the game started at a frantic pace a Hundred Acre took control early doors and took the lead midway through the first half. But has the half reached it's final ten minutes Paget Sports came into the game and deservedly equalized from a cracking strike from Tony Breeden with about eight minutes remaining before half time. Paget Sports saw out the rest of the first half on top with Hundred Acre still trying to recover from the equalizer.

The Second half was a more even affair with chances at a premium but midway through the second half Hundred Acre again took the lead again. It then looked as though Hundred Acre would hold out but Paget Sports had other ideas. A great cross from Scott Handley was met by Anthony Murray who brilliantly turned and powered a shot towards goal, the Acre keeper did well to keep the Murray effort out, parrying out straight to the feet of Dean Taylor who buried the shot with ease. To draw Paget Sports Level with three minutes remaining.

It looked as though the game was heading for extra time when Hundred Acre built one more attack a long cross field ball evaded the whole Paget Sports defence dropping straight to the feet of the unmarked Hundred Acre striker who powered his shot into the ground fortunately for him it bounced agonizingly over the out stretched arms of the Paget Sports keeper Scott Curtis and into the net. to Give Hundred Acre a 3-2 victory and take them into the Ernie Baxter Memorial Trophy Final.

All of us would like to wish Hundred Acre all the best in the final. Well played.

Paget line up: Curtis, Handley Butler, Shoesmith(Sullivan), Sanders, Carr (Murray), Ingram (Simms), Taylor, Harrison (Murray), Tarano, Breeden. Unused Sub: Foulsham.

11th January 2009 - Premier Division 1
Lion of Judah
2 - 5
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Breeden 3, Tarano 2

An excellent encounter between these two hard working teams. Paget stole the points and start the new year with a 5-2 win. In tough, sticky conditions, both teams served up a festive performance. The opening period was undoubtedly in the care of Lion of Judah and so on or about 20 minutes it came as no surprise when they took the lead. A ragged Paget defence appeared to lack confidence and appeared to wither on every Lion attack. A little tinkering with the Paget midfield assisted the defence and at or about 40 mins, Handley, played a forward ball for Breeden, who aptly lobbed the advancing goal keeper, to level the score. Half Time 1-1.
The second half came alive, when Breeden was felled as he ran at the Lion defence. Breeden converted the spot kick to put Paget 2-1 up. Substitutions were required for the injured Handley and Sullivan. Butler and Shoesmith entered the fray like for like. A tactical switch welcomed the introduction of Anthony Murray for team captain, Derek Carr. Almost immediately, Murray was responsible for Paget's 3rd, when his deft headed flick saw Torano run onto the ball and slide it past the advancing keeper. Breeden was able to clinch his hat trick when he collected a through ball and similarly slide the ball past the advancing keeper. Poor Paget challenges permitted Lion of Judah to advance on the Paget goal. Curtis was able to block a number of attempts on goal, but it came as no surprise when sheer persistence saw Lion claw one back (4-2). The tenacity of Torano payed dividends, as he followed up on a cross, that was held then fumbled by the keeper. A tap home made it 5-2 on the day.

A club debut for former Bramton playmaker, Mark Ingram.

Another entertaining encounter that was well marshalled by match official, Mr Craig Beechey.

Paget line up: Curtis, Handley (Butler),Sullivan (Shoesmith),D. Munday, Sanders, Carr (Murray), Ingram, Taylor, Harrison, Tarano, Breeden. Unused Sub: Talbot.

Warren Athletic
Paget Scorers - Breeden , Tarano 2

Today saw Paget Sports secure another valuable 3 points against a tough Warren Athletic side and set us up for a more than interesting January. Due to injury and work commitments we had to make a couple of changes to the team that beat Warren Athletic in extra time the week before.
In came Dan Munday and Deano for Jay and Deka respectively.

Paget started out in a 4-4-2 formation and from the start competed all over the park and passed the ball around with authority. After a dubious disallowed Claude goal it didn’t take long for Tony Breeden to mark his home debut with a goal from the penalty spot. Just before half time Claude and Paget got what they deserved by scoring a second goal.

Half time Paget Sports 2 - 0 Warren Athletic

Paget started the second half much like the first and were in control of the game until Mike Sanders reacted poorly to a Warren tackle / kick and decided to do some kicking of his own. Paget were reduced to ten men. The game then swayed in the favour of Warren Athletic but Paget stood firm and worked tirelessly to hang on to their lead.

The game was made safe after an excellent move down the left with the ball eventually falling to Claude who to rammed home his second goal and Pagets third of the game from close range.
Warren scored a consolation mid way through the half but Paget seen out the rest of the match with a display of excellent effort and determination.

I would personally like to that all the players for their great contribution and wish every  a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Keep Right On !!

Team: Curtis, Simms, Sullivan, Sanders, Handley, Taylor, D Munday, Butler, Harrison, Breeden, Tarano. Subs:

14th December 2008 - Festival Cup Round 3
Warren Athletic
1 - 4
Paget Sports (AET)
Paget Scorers - Tarano 2, Murray, Sanders

A superb spectacle for both the neutral and club officials alike. The fixture served up every scenario feasable. Warren Athletic took the lead on or about 30 mins when a poor kick from Paget keeper, Curtis, fell at the feet of a Warren midfielder, who returned the ball from circa 30 yards, lobbing the stranded keeper and placing Warren 1-0 up. It remained so until half time. Paget started the second half with a new shape, and immediately felt the benefits. Anthony Murray came off the bench joining three strikers already in place. Sustained Paget pressure eventually led to a deserved equaliser when Murray stabbed the ball home. At 1-1 the result appeared reflective of the 90 minutes overall. Extra time witnessed Paget in the ascendancy. Klaudian Tarano stabbed home the Paget 2nd while Mike Sanders headed home the 3rd. Tarano laid claim to a 4th Paget goal and his 13th of the campaign. Warren rallied with a series of corners but stalwart Paget defending rebuffed the Warren intentions.

Paget have won 4 of their 5 cup games. 3 of those wins required extra time!

A very pleasing display.

Team: Curtis, Simms, Sullivan, Sanders, Handley, Carr (capt), Munday, Butler, Harrison, Breedon, Tarano. Subs: Murray for Butler, Taylor for Carr, and Shoesmith for Simms.

7th December 2008 - Premier Division 1
Paget Sports
3 - 3
St Gerards
Paget Scorers - Murray 2, Tarano

Historically, this was the first league game between the two Castle Vale sides. A delayed KO ensured that the Vale stadium pitch was frost free and deemed safe by match official, Ken Wallace.

The opening 20 minutes were dominated by Paget. A goal each from Tarano and a first Paget goal for Anthony Murray, were clear evidence of that domination. An opportunity for a decisive 3rd goal was well saved by the St Gerrards keeper when parrying away a low shot from the through on goal, Tarano. That act seemed to signal the end of Paget's domination and the beginning of a St Gerrards revival. St Gerrards began to dominate the midfield, with Paget seemingly unable to get possession. Both St Gerrards goals were resultant of poor midfield challenges. Half time 2-2.

The second half started in similar style to the opening minutes of the first half, with Anthony Murray claiming a second and a Paget 3rd goal. The game remained intense and every quarter fought. Eventually, the physical power of St Gerrards caused a weary Paget side to sit deeper and deeper. St Gerrards smelt blood and were clearly dominating significant areas of the park. With paget hemmed back, a succession of corner kicks followed. It was only a matter of time before one of those corner's was going to count. True to form, an equaliser was stabbed home (3-3). Paget never recovered, appearing dishevelled, battle weary and devoid of basic invention. With the spirit broken, St Gerrards were able to mount attack after attack.

Numerous goal scoring opportunities were repelled and broken up by the excellent goal keeping antics of Scott Curtis. Without Curtis, the result would have been out of sight. In conclusion, Paget were lucky to escape with a point. Had Tarano taken his opportunity to score a third on that 20 minute mark, then who knows?

Overall, St Gerrards won the plaudits.

Paget Sports FC: Curtis, Talbot (Sullivan), Dixon, Knight, Taylor, Simms, Sanders, Carr, Shoesmith, Tarano, Murray. Subs Not Used: Foulsham, Todd.

30th November 2008 - Premier Division 1
Paget Sports
1 - 0
Warren Rovers
Paget Scorer - Shoesmith

A contest that concentrated on the balance in Midfield. There was little for either set of forwards to cheer so I have no alternative but to keep this report short and sweet. A major contributor to that demise was the poor standard of passing from both teams. The standard being so low that players lost their discipline and left their positions. Shape fell victim. After 25 minutes or so frustration crept in and the game swayed more in favour of Warren. At half time 0-0 was a relative reflection of affairs.

The second half came and went with little to cheer. As the game rolled on, personal discipline was always going to be a key factor. It was clear that those who could overcome the frustration best were likely to succeed. So, when Rovers lost theirs, it was a 70th minute direct free kick that made the difference. John Shoesmith stepped up and struck a low, true, effort from 20 yards. The stand in keeper never flinched! And that was that!

I would like to point out that this was Paget's first game for 3 weeks and it showed. On the positive side, the game was clean and gamely contested without incident. A fair result may have been 0-0.

Much room for improvement and an early warning before the home fixture with St Gerards on Sunday 7th December.

Paget Sports FC: Curtis, Handley, Dixon, Knight, Taylor, Butler, Sanders, Carr, Sullivan (Shoesmith), Tarano, Murray.

9th November 2008 - Ernie Baxter Mem Cup Round 2
Paget Sports
6 - 0
Lyndon Urchins
Paget Scorers - Butler 2, Tarano 2, Bolton, Harrison

Paget Sports made into the semi final of the Ernie Baxter Memorial Cup with an emphatic win against Lyndon Urchins. Andy Butler gave Paget Sports the lead with a well placed shot after 13 minutes. The 6-0 scoreline didn't look on the cards for Paget Sports as Lyndon Urchins battled gamely up till to half time and a perfect goal keeping display from Paget Sports keeper Scott Curtis made sure Paget Sports went in at the break with a 1-0 half time lead.

The second half was a different story Lyndon Urchins lost a player injured and played the whole of the second half with ten men but still held firm until the killer second goal from Debutant Chris Bolton this completely knocked the stuffing out of Lyndon Urchins. With further goals from Klaudian Tarano 2, Andy Butler's second goal of the game and Lee Harrison finishing off the rout, made it a comfortable morning for Paget Sports.

Paget Sports will join Hundred Acre, Halfway and Bramton or Warren Rovers in the semi final draw.

Paget Sports FC: Curtis, Handley, Harrison, Talbot, Butler, Murray (Foulsham), Simms, Carr, Shoesmith, Tarano, Bolton.

2nd November 2008 - Premier Division 1
Small Heath Alliance
1 - 5
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Harrison 2, Butler, Carr, Tarano

An enthralling fixture on paper did not disappoint at Saltley Leisure centre. Last season's corresponding fixture witnessed an 8 goal thriller with a 4-4 draw. On this occasion, only 6 goals could be achieved, but as an entertainment, it did not disapoint. The opening 18 minutes were a testing period for small Heath as Paget squandered two excellent opportunities. Lee Harrison eventually nut megged the goalkeeper, to place Paget 1-0 up.

An unfortunate incident then led to Small Heath playing out the remainder of the game with 10 men. That said, Small Heath Alliance were spurred into action equalising through White and then quite simply, putting Paget through a torrid wave of attack's and pressure. Opportunities abound with none converted. Gratefully Paget held out for half time. 1-1 mostly down to the heroics of Paget keeper Scott Curtis who pulled off a sting of fine saves.

Paget came out a little more composed but were once again placed under pressure. Wave after wave of Alliance pressure was soaked up then repelled when 18 minutes into the second half, Tarano, scored with a rocket from the tightest of angles. It was just the tonic for Paget who were able to extend the lead when a Shoesmith bullet of a cross was met by the diving figure of captain Carr. With Alliance seemingly reeling, Butler got free and ran towards goal striking a low shot past the advancing keeper (4-1). It was then left for Harrison to to make it 5 when he rounded the keeper, who seemingly had done enough to push Harrison wide, but an excellent finish made it 5-1.

I wish to thank the players and officials of SHAFC for being dignified in defeat. Lady luck shone for the visitors!

Our thanks to match referee, Neil Jones, who officiated in a professional and disciplined manner.

Paget Sports FC: Curtis, Handley, D.Munday, Knight, Butler, Sullivan, Simms, Carr, Shoesmith, Tarano (Foulsham), Harrison.

Bramton
Paget Scorers - Harrison, D Munday, Shoesmith

Once again, another fine encounter, with both teams displaying open and attacking football. This fixture is always a close hard fought encounter. On this occasion, a fine first half finish by Lee Harrison put Paget one up at half time. Half time 1-0. Within 5 minutes of the restart, all level, as Paget invited the opposition on. It was only a matter of time as Paget backed off and backed off. So, no surprise whrn Bramton equalised. A Paget corner witnessed a fine header from Dan Munday and restoring the Paget advantage. A fine 20 yard strike from John shoesmith beat the visiting goalkeeper all hands down.

At 3-1 Paget should have been safe, but no, a lack of concentration and allowing the opposition to have time & space invited a 2nd Bramton goal. The remaining 15 minutes were nail biting all round but Paget held on to take the 3 points. Bramton will feel hard done by!

Our thanks to match referee Phil Coleman who maintained a strict discipline between the teams.

Paget Sports FC: Griffiths, Sanders, D.Munday, Talbot (Knight), R Munday, Taylor (Sullivan), Simms (Handley), Carr, Shoesmith, Tarano, Harrison. Subs Not Used; Foulsham.

19th October 2008 - B'Ham County Vase Round 1
Paget Sports
1 - 2
Hundred Acre
Paget Scorer - Harrison

Yet another feast of football entertainment was served at the Vale stadium. Both teams contributed to a highly charged and fast moving spectacle. Hundred Acre set out their stall by playing a continuous & momentous long ball game. The forward pace was present but was some what contained. Paget played a short passing game and aimed to sneak around the back of their illustrious guests.

Clear cut opportunities were at a premium and the first half ended goal less. The second half witnessed Lee Harrison having a one on one with the Acre goalkeeper. The advancing keeper began to go to ground as Harrison's shot struck his legs. The rebound fell kindly for Harrison who tucked it away. Within 5 minutes, Hundred Acre were level when gifted an opportunity.

Centre back, Dan Munday, played a flawed ball in front and across the 18 yard line. The pass was intercepted and led to debutant keeper, Michael Griffiths, pulling off a fine save. The resultant corner saw the ball bouncing around inside the penalty box where Rencher was on hand to finish.

A further five minutes passed and a handling mistake from Keeper, Griffiths, saw Rencher on hand to tap home. Paget battled bravely for the remaining 20 minutes, but were unable to pull back the deficit.

Congratulations to Hundred Acre Fc and our Best wishes for your future in the County Vase.

Paget Sports FC: Griffiths, Sanders (Franklin), D.Munday, Knight (Talbot), Sanders, Taylor, Simms, Carr, Sullivan (Shoesmith), Tarano, Harrison. Subs Not Used; Foulsham, Handley, Davis.

12th October 2008 - Festival Cup Round 2
Paget Sports
3 - 2
Bramton
(AET) Paget Scorers - Harrison, Tarano, Butler

What a cracking fixture this turned out to be. Pure entertainment with every possible ingredient present. Paget went one up on 20 minutes when Lee Harrison broke free of the off side trap and lobbed the approaching keeper. 10 minutes on,

Bramton got the equaliser. What appeared to be a safe situation on the Paget bye line turned into a nightmare, when Paul knight and Scott Curtis failed to effectively communicate, which permitted through sheer persistence, the opportunity from the tightest of angles. The ball was lobbed into the net. 1-1 at half time.

Derek Carr played a balanced ball between defenders, leaving Tarano with an opportunity one on one with the Bramton keeper. A low strike beat the advancing keeper and put Paget 2-1 up. On or about 70 minutes, Bramton were allowed to advance un detered. A fine strike from Tester levelled the scores and took the game into extra time.

The warm conditions and pace of the game saw a number of players struggling with cramp. The first period of extra time witnessed Andy Butler getting the better of his marker. On one such occasion placinging a solid shot into the Bramton net, 3-2!

Paget changed shape to 4-5-1 and held on with baited breath! Both teams saw opportunities come and go. Mike Sanders was denied when his shot struck the cross bar. On occasion, the woodwork saved both teams. Congratulations to both teams.

28th September 2008 - Premier Division 1

Lyndon Urchins
Paget Scorers - Tarano, Carr, Knight

I make no apologies for keeping this match report short. I would like to congratulate the players and officials of Lyndon Urchins. Excellent attitude when turning out with a scratch side of 11 players, reduced to 10 during the second half. As for Paget Sports, a very rusty, apathetic, and disjointed account. It required three Substitutions on or about 70 minutes to inject life to the performance.

The first half had witnessed a deserved goal for Paget striker, Klaudian Tarano. Unfortunately that strike was cancelled out 5 minutes before half time.

The second half, saw Lyndon Urchins take a 2-1 lead following a fortunate but wicked deflection. Paget were fortunate to get level when captain, Derek Carr, placed a fine penalty strike.

Sustained pressure on the Lyndon goal, brought about a winning goal, when central defender, Paul Knight, headed home.

Paget were at their best in the last 20 minutes.

Paget Sports FC: Wesley, Talbot, Knight, D.Munday, Simms, Sanders (Handley), Butler, Sullivan (Taylor), Carr. Tarano, Harrison (Shoesmith). Subs Not Used; Foulsham, Bickler.

21st September 2008 - Ernie Baxter Cup Round 1
Lion of Judah
3 - 6
Paget Sports
(AET) Paget Scorers - Tarano 4, Butler, Carr

Paget ran out worthy 6-3 winners in extra time. A goal each for Andy Butler, and captain, Derek Carr, together with four goals from Klaudian Torano were just enough to see off a spirited Lion of Judah side. Paget had to wait 20 minutes before Torano was able to put his side ahead. A further 5 minutes and Butler had volleyed Paget 2-0 up.

At that stage it was difficult to see Lion of Judah recovering the fixture, but, recover they did, pulling one back just prior to half time.  A cruel blow for Paget, with much heart restored to the Lion's plight. The opening period of the 2nd half, saw Paget rocking and rolling. An equaliser in the opening 5 minutes made it 2-2 and Paget seriously looked in trouble.

The storm was weathered when Torano broke away to finish with panache. It remained 3-2 in Paget's favour until 7 minutes from time. A Lion's corner was allowed to bobble around the penalty box before get bundled over the line. 3-3 and extra time.

The final 30 minutes was entirely about fitness, attitude, desire and character. During the first period Terano was able to put Paget 4-3 up. The second period saw the Lion's pushing forward for an equaliser. That allowed sufficient space for Carr and Torano to take their opportunities.

Both teams entertained for free!

Match referee, Mr Mick Parr, had a credable and good game.

Warren Athletic
2 - 1
Paget Sports
Paget Scorer - Tarano

Warren Athletic & Paget Sports fought an entertaining game that saw Paget go one behind on 4 minutes. Centre back Dan Munday was judged to have taken down a Warren striker inside the penalty box. Half time 1-0. The second half needed 15 minutes for Paget striker, Torano, to place Paget back on level terms. An acute turn and shot inside the box was good enough to beat the Warren keeper.

The Result remained for all of 5 minutes, when a Warren cross was met by the head of centre back, Mike Sanders, who inadvertently beat his own keeper, Ben Howard.

Warren soked up immense Paget pressure and held out for a 2-1 win. Managers opinion: Paget deserved a share of the spoils. Congratulations to the debutant players, Ben Howard, Jason Talbott, Andy Butler, Dean Taylor, Tom Franklin, Klaudian Tarano, and John Shoesmith.

Paget Sports Team : Ben Howard, Jason Talbot (John Shoesmith inj) (Scott Handley), Mike Sanders, Dan Munday, Andy Butler, Derek Carr (Capt), Dean Taylor, Tom Franklin, Matthew Sullivan (Jay Simms), Lee Harrison, Klaudian Tarano, Subs Not Used ; Ryan Davis, Tom Foulsham

24th August 2008 - Pre-Season Friendly
Grosvenor Park
3 - 0
Paget Sports

Not for the first time this pre-season, Paget Sports turned up with less than a full team. However, to those who did put in a shift, they know they can hold their heads high. With only 13 players in attendance, it was always going to be a massive ask, to get a result against the Festival league champions.

With 5 minutes on the clock, Paget found themselves trailing 2-0. Two excellent strikes, were enough to beat, young keeper, Gavin Rickus.  A change of shape brought sanity to the beleaguered Paget defence. It was unfortunate that unrelated incidents, saw the substitution of Adam Flynn (Grosvenor) with an ankle injury and Paget midfieder, Ryan Davies, with a gash above his right eye. Chris Bolton made his Paget debut as Ryan's replacement. Unfortunately, the talented striker had a knee concern and was replaced at half time. That injury, herald the debutant appearance, of Sutton Rugby player, Tom Foulsham.

The second period of play witnessed chances squandered at both ends of the pitch. Grosvenor made Paget pay with a 3rd and final goal on or about 75 minutes.

With all available players used, Paget held out without conceding further.

The Paget players displayed tenacity, courage, and commitment. Without those traits, the opponents would have ran rampant.

Our thanks to the following Paget players: Gavin Rickus, Scott Handley, Andy Todd, Mike Sanders, Jay Simms, Lee Harrison, Derek Carr (capt), Kurt White, Ryan Davies, Kapil Kapur, Chris Bolton, Richard Bolton, and Tom Foulsham

17th August 2008 - Pre-Season Friendly
Orton Vale
0 - 0
Paget Sports

As a 0-0 pre season friendly the game was really entertaining. Mike Sanders and Derek Carr hit the woodwork for Paget Sports and Scott Curtis pulled off two or three fine saves to deny Orton Vale.

Matt Sullivan had the best chance of all to give Paget Sports the win. when he was sent clear only for the Orton Vale keeper to quickly react to the danger bravely coming out to take the ball off Matt's feet.

The game was a good run out for Paget Sports and i would like to thank the twelve players that turned up for the game. We worked very hard in the game as they had about twenty players for the game. Once again lads well played and thank you for your commitment.

Paget Sports would like to thank All at Orton Vale Football Club for their hospitality and wish them all the very best of luck for the season ahead.

Team sheet: Scott Curtis, Scott Handley, Mike Sanders, Dan Munday, Andy Todd, Derek Carr (Capt), Dean Taylor, Jay Simms, Matthew Sullivan, Lee Harrison, Kurt White, Ryan Davies.

10th August 2008 - Pre-Season Friendly
Hundred Acre
4 - 2
Paget Sports
Paget Scorers - Ralph, Carr

Today's friendly was an excellent work out against established Premier One outfit, Hundred Acre Fc. Three, thirty minute periods were observed with rolling on and off substitutions. Paget Sports were caught cold on 5 minutes. The central defence was turned with ease and a low shot struck home. Paget fought back with a Lionel Ralph penalty on 10 minutes. On 17 minutes a Scott Handley cross, was superbly met by team captain, Derek Carr. A deft header, wrong footed the keeper and Paget were 2-1 up.

On 47 minutes a free kick found Lee Harrison, who finished well, however, much to the Paget dismay, the referee cancelled the goal due to a moving ball at point of free kick! On 50 minutes, and to rub it in, Hundred Acre were awarded a penalty for a Sanders handball. The converted penalty made it 2-2.

On 60 minutes, play entered the 3rd period.

On 70 minutes, sustained Hundred Acre pressure paid off, when centre back Mike Sanders inadvertently turned a cross, into his own net. On 72 minutes, the Paget pack were folding, when a low shot beat Scott Curtis. Full time, Hundred Acre 4 Paget Sports 2.

An excellent workout for the Sports.

Team sheet: Scott Curtis, Scott Handley, James Mace, Mike Sanders, Andy Todd, Derek Carr (Capt), Dean Taylor, Jay Simms, Matthew Sullivan, Lee Harrison, Lionel Ralph, Kurt White, Ryan Davies and Adam Bicker.

Patrick Kavenagh
Paget Scorers - R Munday, K White

Paget Sports gained a valuable workout in this competitive 1st pre-season game. Two first half headers from Richard Munday (24 mins) and then Kurt White (27 mins) gave Paget Sports a hard fought victory against a very useful Patrick Kavenagh side who played some good football particularly in the 2nd half of the game.

Paget Sports manager John Buchan used all the squad during the game and he is hopeful he will have a greater number of players to choose from in next Sundays pre-season game away to Hundred Acre as a number of players are due back from summer holidays.

Paget Sports would like to thank Patrick Kavenagh for playing their part in a very entertaining game and wish them all the best for the season ahead and also thanks to Phil Coleman for refereeing the game at short notice.
